Open Source Readiness - Weekly Update - 7 March 2023

March 07, 2023

This year at FINOS we are focusing on one of FINOS' key existing projects: Open Source Readiness. This is FINOS' term for helping the finance industry "do open source properly".

There’s lots going on in the open source readiness domain over the last couple of weeks. Let’s look at things we’ve completed, what’s in progress, and what’s coming up.

Ready To Use

As we’ve talked about over the last few weeks on this blog, we’ve been working on some documentation of the Open Source Maturity Model, which you can review here.

As the document describes, this brings together the OSPO maturity model by the TODOGroup and compares it to the OW2 Good Governance Initiative.

As is common with most maturity models from CMMI-onwards, there are five levels, from Level 1 (Hey, we’re using some open source!) to Level 5 (open source is baked into the strategy of our business). Read more here.

Work In Progress

Moving on, we have some work in progress:

  • PR 106 is all about setting up the “About” pages of OSR. Please take a look at the preview and let us know what you think. The idea is that all article contributors will have their bios featured on this page.
  • PR 111 is the start of some documentation around the artifacts associated with open source. Here, we have simple introductions to Licenses and CLAs and DCOs. Please review!
  • Finally, with the help from the SIG, we’ve broken down the main topics that a CEO will need to understand about open source. You can review and comment here.

Coming Up - Could You Write an Article?

Over the last few weeks, several subject matter experts have put up their hands to help author articles for the Body of Knowledge. Could you be one of them? Please get in touch with me here if you’d like to help author an article for the OSR site!

  • We’re looking for succinct, introductory articles that explain a particular topic, with lots of references (through links) to supporting materials on the internet.
  • If you’ve not used GitHub before, we’ll accept articles via email or other means and help create the pull requests for you.
  • We’ll review the articles with you to help remove any obvious errors and ensure a consistency with the house style
  • We’ll get the OSR SIG to review the articles in the regular meetings. So far, this has been a fun experience which has given rise to interesting debate and “lightbulb” moments for the group. This is how we explore the topic!
  • You’ll be added to the “About” page with your biography (we’re all about credit where it’s due).
