BUILDING 5-SPOT WORKSHOP: SPOT SCHEDULING FOR REGULATED KUBERNETES ON CAPI -  OSFF LONDON

June 23, 2026, Exact time TBD (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM UK)
London

Maximize Infrastructure Utilisation While Maintaining Regulatory Compliance

Kubernetes fleets in financial services routinely run below 30% utilisation—a direct CAPEX drag driven by regulatory headroom, capacity reservations, and workload isolation requirements.

5-Spot, RBC Capital Markets' first open-source contribution and a FINOS-hosted project, reclaims that idle capacity by turning Cluster API (CAPI) into a spot-aware scheduling substrate, delivering measurable infrastructure savings at fleet scale.

Join us for a code-level deep dive led by the project's author. Attendees will deploy 5-Spot on a k0smotron managed cluster, classify spot-eligible workloads, and watch the scheduler redistribute capacity in real time. We will open the hood on the design decisions that matter for regulated environments: deterministic preemption windows, workload residency guarantees, graceful drain semantics, and CAPI reconciliation under continuous churn.

Workshop Description

This hands-on technical session is designed to explore the intersection of extreme infrastructure cost-optimization (FinOps) and rigorous financial services regulations. Participants will spend the session interacting directly with the codebase and orchestration tooling to understand how to safely utilize spot instances without compromising cluster health or compliance.

  • Tech Stack Covered: Cluster API (CAPI) and k0smotron for hosted control planes, k0rdent for multi-cluster placement, CEL-based ValidatingAdmissionPolicy for workload classification, and integration points with Confidential Containers and idle-node reclamation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This is a highly technical, code-level deep dive designed for practitioners managing container infrastructure at scale within regulated guardrails. We recommend this session for:

  • Platform Engineers & Kubernetes Administrators: Responsible for managing multi-cluster environments, optimizing resource utilization, and maintaining cluster health under high churn.
  • Cloud Infrastructure Architects: Designing enterprise-grade cloud topologies who need to balance aggressive cost-optimization with strict regulatory headroom.
  • SREs & DevOps Tech Leads: Overseeing workload scheduling, cluster resilience, graceful drain mechanics, and deterministic preemption strategies.
  • Open Source Contributors & Maintainers: Wanting to get hands-on with a cutting-edge FINOS project and establish a direct path toward contributing to 5-Spot.

What You Will Walk Away With:

  1. A Working 5-Spot Deployment: Hands-on experience deploying 5-Spot on a k0rdent management cluster and watching the scheduler dynamically redistribute capacity in real time.
  2. Advanced Workload Isolation Strategies: A masterclass in using CEL-based ValidatingAdmissionPolicy to safely classify and segregate spot-eligible workloads from mission-critical applications.
  3. Regulated Architecture Blueprints: Deep insight into engineering design decisions built for financial services—specifically deterministic preemption windows, workload residency guarantees, and CAPI reconciliation.
  4. A Fast-Track Contributor Path: Direct access to the project's author and core maintainers, providing you with the exact roadmap needed to start contributing features or documentation to 5-Spot.

WORKSHOP PREREQUISITES & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Laptop Required: You will be executing code and managing live cluster deployments.
  • Technical Baseline: This workshop assumes a working familiarity with Kubernetes primitives, basic Cluster API (CAPI) concepts, and containerized workload lifecycle management.
