For the sixth year, FINOS and Linux Foundation Research, in partnership with GitHub and Scott Logic, with sponsorship from BrightQuery, have studied open source adoption, contribution, and collaboration in financial services. This year's findings show an industry that recognizes the value of open source (88%) and is now sharing the work of building and maintaining it.

Contribution is accelerating. GitHub commits from financial services rose 63% in a year, and the share of firms that actively encourage contribution has tripled since 2024. The main driver is no longer giving back but lowering technology risk and technical debt (84%).

Security vulnerabilities (46%) and supply chain attacks (42%) remain top concerns, pushing firms toward shared remediation. Industry standards are still where collaboration delivers the most value (47%), and open data is emerging as a new frontier.

AI tops the list of open source technologies most valuable to the industry's future, and agentic AI is in production at an increasing number of firms. Governance, not technology, is the main barrier to scaling it.

The industry has learned how to collaborate. Now it is building shared platforms, standards, and solutions — and capturing value from them faster than ever.
