Project updates: fdc3

One of the top most active projects within FINOS right now is FDC3!

Back in July at the Open Source in Finance Forum, London we had a big announcement of FDC3 2.0 entering the "Pre Draft" stage. This standard will be adopted fully in mid-September, so there's a lot of work going into preparing for that adoption - notably, cleaning up the roadmap and the documentation and adopting the Linux Foundation's Community Specification License.

Some more FDC3 News - Sebastien Ben M'Barek has joined Nick Kolba as a maintainer on Electron FDC3: the Open-Source FDC3 Desktop implementation project being run inside FINOS. As this project gains pace and polish, I'm hoping we see more developers decide to help out on building a really useful implementation.

Looking ahead, we're eagerly anticipating seeing the completion of the FDC3 Desktop Conformance program, currently being built by Colin Eberhardt of Scott-Logic. As discussed at OSFF, this is a test suite that allows us to ensure that desktop agent vendors have implemented FDC3 properly. We're really looking forward to handing out some of the FDC3-Certified badges soon.

Another piece of work in the pipeline is a FINOS-branded FDC3 app-store. The App-store has always been a part of the FDC3 specification, but previously vendors managed their own app stores. We're really hoping that with the advent of FDC3 2.0 FINOS can start maintaining its own FDC3 app-store, containing apps from vendors, financial institutions and other open-source players.

Finally, let's talk about FDC3 strategy: FDC3 has been phenomenally successful inside organizations. Some of the larger financial institutions have gone all-in and built large portfolios of FDC3 applications, all able to interop together. However, inter-organisational FDC3 is somewhere we want to go next. FINOS aims to coordinate some business-to-business interop use-cases later this year, working with multiple buy-side and sell-side firms and building out some useful business workflows. Stay tuned for more updates as it happens!
