TALK

Crafting the Business Case for Creating an Open Source Project & Digital Transformation

This session will look at the key questions to address when crafting a business case for creating an Open Source project. We'll look into common questions that should be answered, including:

  • Why do you want to open source a project?
  • Why not just give a proprietary product away for free?
  • What are your strategic goals? What's your "why"?
  • Why do you want to create a community?
  • Who will your community / target audience be?
  • The relevancy, benefits, and ROI of open source, including looking at the business drivers and goals.
  • What organizations are doing internally to adopt open source technology, tools, process, and ways of working.
  • What organizations are doing externally, working within an ecosystem of partners and communities—including competitors.

Ultimately, your business case and strategy should articulate why open sourcing a project can benefit your company’s goals.
