FINOS CALM HANDS-ON WORKSHOP: ARCHITECTURE AS CODE -  OSFF LONDON

June 23, 2026, Exact time TBD (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM UK)
London

Shift from Diagrams to Code: Master the Common Architecture Language Model

Traditional, document-driven architecture governance can no longer keep up with modern engineering velocities.

Join us for an immersive, deeply practical workshop dedicated entirely to the Common Architecture Language Model (CALM)—one of the fastest-growing projects in FINOS history. This session is designed to get you hands-on with the core tools, schemas, and syntax of CALM. You will learn how to transition from static, stale architecture diagrams to live, machine-readable Architecture as Code (AaC) that can be versioned, validated, and integrated directly into software delivery lifecycles.

Workshop Description

This is a pure hands-on session where participants will spend the afternoon writing code, running validations, and interacting with framework tooling. Moving away from manual design reviews, this workshop provides the practical skills needed to implement automated guardrails for infrastructure and service deployment.

A Note for Cloud & AI Governance Practitioners: > While the core mission of this workshop is foundational CALM mastery, understanding CALM is highly relevant for those working across the broader FINOS ecosystem. CALM serves as a cornerstone for the FINOS AI Initiative, integrating the AI Governance Framework, Common Cloud Controls (CCC), and CALM into a unified "Governance as Code" pipeline.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is built primarily for Enterprise Architects and technical leaders looking to modernize how their organizations define and govern system design. It is also highly valuable for:

  • Solutions & Systems Architects: Eager to replace manual design reviews with automated validation.
  • Platform Engineers: Building automated guardrails for infrastructure and service deployment.
  • FINOS Contributors: Looking to deepen their technical involvement in the Architecture as Code working group.

What You Will Walk Away With:

This is a pure hands-on session. You will spend the afternoon writing code, running validations, and interacting with the framework tooling to achieve the following:

  • CALM Modeling Fundamentals: How to translate complex financial system components, relationships, and boundaries into standard CALM schemas.
  • Automated Design Validation: Hands-on experience running local CLI tools to syntactically validate your architecture files and catch design flaws before writing application code.
  • Visualizing Code-Based Architecture: Using CALM tooling to generate interactive visual representations directly from your structured data files.
  • Extending the Framework: Strategies to customize and extend the model to map to your internal enterprise requirements, cloud configurations, or AI deployment patterns.

WORKSHOP PREREQUISITES & REQUIREMENTS:

This is a highly interactive technical session. To fully participate in the exercises, please bring a laptop with the following configured:

  • Hardware Required: A laptop with local administrative/installation privileges.
  • Development Tools: A modern IDE (VS Code is highly recommended).
  • Source Control: A GitHub account and Git installed locally.
  • Technical Baseline: Solid familiarity with JSON/YAML structures and standard enterprise architecture patterns.

(Note: Specific repository links, CLI tools, and a "Day 0" setup guide will be sent to approved registrants prior to the event).
