Mobile is the new branch. As banks develop their mobile apps to bring as many in-branch functions as possible to people’s phones, they’re also consolidating redundant branches in urban areas, opening new branches in rural markets and redesigning existing ones to be more self-service driven. They’re taking inspiration from other industries’ storefronts and rethinking who would best benefit from the physical space. At the same time, they’re rethinking their business models, recognizing that to compete in a digital world they’ll have to become marketplaces for banking services — even if those services are produced and sold by competing startups or retailers.
